Herbalife Nutrition Survey Reveals Filipinos Concerned About Aging-Related Health Issues but Underestimate the Importance of Nutrition in Healthy Aging
PHILIPPINES, October 19, 2017 – Premier global nutrition company, Herbalife Nutrition has released findings from its Asia Pacific Healthy Aging Survey, which uncovered insights into the aging-related concerns and attitudes of consumers in the region. Conducted with 6,000 respondents aged 40 and above across 12 countries in Asia Pacific, including 500 from Philippines, the survey revealed that while majority of consumers are concerned about the potential health issues caused by aging and believe that active steps can be taken to help them age healthily, many of them underestimate the importance of nutrition in healthy aging.
According to the survey findings, 96% of Filipino-respondents are concerned about the potential health issues caused by aging, citing heart-related, bone/joint-related, eye-related issues topping their list of concerns. However, despite the high levels of concern, 94% of respondents agree that they can take active steps to help age healthily.
Among the steps that the Filipino–respondents will take to age healthily, 40% of respondents will most likely engage in more regular physical activity. In comparison, only 32% of respondents said they will most likely make better nutrition choices, five percent (5%) said they will take supplements, and nine percent (9%) will go for more regular medical check-ups.
“While the majority of respondents have shown their concern about health issues related to aging, findings also show that many seemed to have taken a laid-back stance in preparing for a better quality of their lives as they age,” said Mr. Rosalio Valenzuela, General Manager of Herbalife Philippines. “As a premier global nutrition company, we are taking a proactive move to invigorate our efforts to help consumers, especially those outside urban Manila, become more aware of the need for balanced nutrition and physical activity as well as associated benefits to one’s long term well-being.”
Besides revealing insights into the aging-related health concerns and the steps that Filipino consumers are most willing to take to prevent them, the survey also uncovered the following:
-
When asked about their perception of the state of their own health, the majority – 87% of the respondents consider themselves equally healthy or more healthy than others.
-
However, for heart, emotional and mental health where early signs of anomalies are not easily detected, they displayed higher levels of confidence in the state of their well-being, with 91%, 92%, and 97% of respondents considering themselves equally healthy or more healthy than others respectively, putting them at risk of overestimating the state of their own health.
-
When asked about the biggest obstacles towards healthy aging, lack of time, cost, and lack of motivation were generally seen as the biggest obstacles toward healthy aging.
