Anti Trafficking OFW Movement Launched against Servitude
Last July 18th, 2017 a press conference was held at Golden Bay Restaurant, Pasay City for the public service TV show Buhay OFW which celebrates its 7th year on television. It is hosted and founded by Marissa del Mar. Anti Trafficking OFW Movement (ATOM) will also have its oath taking on October 23, 2017 and makes the event more meaningful.
The TV program takes a step further by taking action against human trafficking of Filipinos which happens all over the world. It reminds everybody that no Filipino is for sale.
2016 marks a great year for the Philippine government for achieving a Tier 1 ranking. It is the highest compliance level with regards to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA). Despite this milestone, our further steps are still needed to ensure that all Filipinos are free from illegal trade.
Modern communication and social media makes catching the criminals even harder and claims more victims of human trafficking. It makes its way through unsuspicious emails promising better jobs abroad. Nobody is safe from the danger of forced labor, prostitution and abuse.
Modern slavery, contrary to popular belief, is not always run by gangsters and operated illegally. The existence of legal permits and travel documents do not spare anyone from being victims. It does not even discriminate among the social classes and everyone can be a prone to the abuse.
Proper education and widespread information about the issue at hand is the first step towards resolving the human trafficking concern. Each of us can help prevent this by doing our part. It may involve reporting illegal recruitment, suspicious activities and possible victims.
ATOM works together with other organizations to bring an end to human trafficking: Buhay OFW Foundation, San Miguel Corporation, Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC ), National Real Estate Association (NREA ), Sterling Group of Companies, Management Association of the Philippines (MAP ), Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI ), Philippine Chinese Charitable Association(PCCA ), Zonta Club of Makati Central Business District, Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., (PCCCII), together with their media partners Aksyon TV, ANC, Light Network Channel, Malaya Business Insight.
